How to Take Apart Your Bunn Coffee Maker

If you want to troubleshoot or solve an internal issue with the Bunn Coffee Maker, you may require taking it apart. Furthermore, sometimes you may also want to disassemble it for cleaning purposes. It doesn’t matter for which reason you want to disassemble the coffee maker; you need to do this entire step very carefully. A wrong move can make the coffee maker unusable. Let’s see how to do this.

Tools Required

You will need several tools to disassemble the device. You will need a 12” #1 Phillips Screwdriver, solder and soldering iron, wire cutter/strippers, small plastic spudger, silicone sealer, rubber mallet, etc. Also, have a cleaning solution if you want to clean the inside.

Here are the instructions you need to follow:

Remove the Top Lid

Before you begin, the first thing you need to do is to drain all the water from the device.  To do this, you need to remove the top lid. Simply grab the edge of the lid using the fingernails and then lift it up. After removing this lid, put it aside. After that, you will find a white rocket valve on the mount. Remove them and store them somewhere. The water reservoir should be visible to you now and you can drain the water.

You may also put the device upside down to remove the water from inside the machine. This should take around 5 minutes to remove all the water from inside. In the meantime, you can start cleaning the lid and valve arm if you want. After the machine is perfectly drained, you can also clean the bottom of the reservoir. There should be a lot of debris or buildup.

Opening the Bottom

Now put the machine vertically to access the bottom. You will find some screws. Use the screwdriver to remove the bottom. Once you remove the screws, the bottom should come up. However, the hot plate wires may prevent it. Cut the wires using the wire cutter. You may mark the wires so that it becomes easier to re-connect them while assembling the device.

Removing the Top Component

Now you need to remove the top part which consists of the reservoir. Find the screws and remove them. The screws should be visible from the bottom of the unit. You should find the screws in four corners. A 12” #1 Philip screwdriver should do this job perfectly to remove the screws. Once you remove the screws, you should be able to remove the reservoir component.

The temp sensor in the unit should visible once you remove the part along with the seal of the inlet. And, you may find buildup in these parts. Clean them using the screwdriver tip or spudger carefully. After cleaning the parts, use the spudger to lift the sensor and the rubber gasket.

Removing Water Out Hose

Now you need to disassemble the sprayer nozzle from the device. Then find the nut that holds the outlet elbow. This should release the outlet elbow and you should be able to take it out easily. Don’t force the parts while removing them. You may end up damaging or breaking them and finding a replacement can be hard. Put special care if the coffee maker is very old.

You will find nasty buildup inside the machine in several places. Make sure to clean them properly. Use your preferred cleaning method to get rid of them. Before applying a cleaning solution, make sure that whether it is safe or not for the parts.

Remove the Wires

Now you need to work on releasing the tank. For this, you need to remove the wires from the heating element. Once you have done this, you can also remove the insulator from the heating element. Then you need to find two white holes. They hold the machine in place. To remove the white holds, you require disconnecting them from the power switch at first. Once you do this, now the rest of things should be released and come out.

You need to remove the switch first from their compartment by squeezing. Don’t pull the wires while doing this as it can damage them. Once you do this, the tank should come out. While working with these parts, make sure that you clean the buildup you find in the middle of dissembling. While working in this step, make sure that you are not cutting the power wires that go to the sensor. That is because they are power insulated and cutting them will malfunction it.

Clean the Buildup

The tank is the place where you will find most of the buildup. You can either use a cleaning solution or a small rubber mallet. Using the mallet can help you to knock off the inside and wear out the debris. Do this carefully as you can damage the tank. It also removes all other things that are stuck to the heating element along with the debris.

Conclusion

That is how you can take apart a Bunn Coffee Maker. Pretty complex, isn’t it? That is why we always recommend doing all the steps carefully. It would be better if you leave the work to professional. Especially, if you don’t have any prior experience with this as you can end up damaging the device.
